Vibez Bar & Grill, founded by former truck drivers Terrence Grant and Monta’ Mayhew, is a thriving restaurant in Kannapolis built on a “Good Vibes Only” philosophy. After recognizing a lack of Black-owned businesses in the area, they saw an opportunity to create a welcoming space with high-quality, made-from-scratch food, including their signature wings.
Now in their third year, they’ve cultivated a strong sense of community, both among their loyal staff and diverse customers. Beyond great food, Vibez offers live entertainment, from jazz nights to karaoke, making it a go-to spot for good times.
From Trucking to the Restaurant Business
Terrence and Monta’ were both truck drivers when they met and bonded over the idea of starting a business together. Terrence, a former college basketball player at UNC Pembroke, had a background in organizing large live entertainment events on campus. After an ACL injury ended his basketball career, he moved to the Charlotte area and spent over a decade driving trucks. That’s where he met Monta’, a seasoned truck driver with more than 20 years of experience.
While both men now own their own individual trucking companies, their true business dream was to open a bar and restaurant. When they learned of a restaurant for sale in Cabarrus County, they jumped at the opportunity to make their vision a reality.

Creating a Unique Dining Experience
The name Vibez Bar & Grill reflects their “Good Vibes Only” philosophy—welcoming everyone to enjoy great food, drinks, and company. Recognizing the lack of Black-owned businesses in Kannapolis, they saw the restaurant’s location as a great opportunity to bring diversity to the area. They have been especially appreciative of the strong support from the community, including their white patrons who have embraced their business from day one.
A Commitment to Quality and Flavor
Now in their third year, they attribute their success to one thing: consistency in quality food. From the start, they committed to making everything from scratch. Monta’s brother, a catering business owner, helped them develop their menu and now serves as the restaurant’s General Manager.
While Vibez is known for its wings, they also cater to a variety of tastes with popular vegan options, including the Beyond Burger and Zucchini Fries. Monta’ recalls a humorous story about their wings—on opening day, the fryers failed, forcing them to cook the wings differently. That unexpected mishap led to the signature flavor their customers love today.
A True Family Atmosphere
Terrence and Monta’ have built a supportive and flexible work environment, ensuring their employees feel valued. They understand that today’s workforce has different needs, and their approach has helped them maintain a dedicated and loyal team.
